Icon Aesthetic System Q&A

What is the Icon Aesthetic System?

The Icon Aesthetic System uses laser technology for resurfacing your skin. Icon is safe for all skin types and has multiple handpieces for various treatment areas and types. Icon was created by Cynosure®, the same company responsible for the MonaLisa Touch® device and procedure at Life Care for Women.

What does Icon treat?

Dr. Sodoma relies on Icon’s varied handheld devices when treating skin conditions such as wrinkles, acne scars, and unwanted hair. Icon reduces fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating new skin growth. Scars from acne or stretch marks shrink or disappear with new collagen production after treatment. Dr. Sodoma destroys hair follicles in areas of unwanted hair without harming surrounding skin. She also suggests using Icon for skin resurfacing of:

  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Sun damage
  • Surgical scars
  • Spider and varicose veins

During your appointment, Dr. Sodoma can explain how Icon best works on your skin as well as discuss any concerns you may have regarding treatment.

How does Icon work?

Icon uses a state-of-the-art light laser in each handheld piece. The light laser targets the specific area of your skin that needs treatment, helping to:

  • Stimulate new skin growth
  • Increase collagen production
  • Destroy hair follicles
  • Break down scar tissue
  • Constrict blood flow

Icon changes your skin with laser light, which triggers your body’s own healing process. While healing, your skin begins to renew, firm, and smooth.

What happens during an Icon treatment?

Immediately before your appointment, Dr. Sodoma recommends removing all makeup and lotions. She may also suggest avoiding tanning beds and self-tanners about four weeks before treatment. After you’re comfortably seated, Dr. Sodoma cleans the treatment area, gives you eye shields, and applies a special gel for the handheld device.

Dr. Sodoma glides the handpiece over the treatment area. You may feel a cool sensation and possibly a slight stinging during the light pulses. The stinging doesn’t last long and may feel warm after your treatment.

After your treatment session is complete, Dr. Sodoma removes the special gel and moisturizes your skin with a cooling lotion. Your skin may feel slightly sunburned for a few days, and you can usually return to normal activities the same day.

Dr. Sodoma further explains any follow-up care and appointments you may need.
